Artists’ Statement

Saint Anonymous is a collective effort to glorify our Creator.

It is an experiment, and as with all experiments, does not assume that this is the best, or only way to approach things.

For our particular situation, we feel that we can be better citizens of His kingdom by forgoing personal recognition; by directing our worship to Him and away from ourselves.

One of the ways we worship Him is through our art. Before the Renaissance, artists were less prone to sign or demand recognition for their works. The new standard we find seems to be a progression of pride, of humanity wanting to supplant its Creator. One of those imperceptible shifts being to interrupt worship with our ego, to cast our eyes on each other, and forget the true glory of our Maker.

Saint Anonymous strives to live in community, to train ourselves into Kingdom living. We have opted to not approach this life by pursuing our own individual careers and interests. If you think of the archetype of the great modern artist, berets and bad haircuts aside, you will often find lives broken by divorce, suicide, adultery, depression, and substance abuse. Individually, we do not feel strong enough to overcome these things, but we believe peace, love, and holiness can happen by collectively supporting and encouraging each other in the name of Christ.

Again, this is an experiment, and we do not judge others for how they choose to worship; we would be the first to concede that we are not holier than thou.

You may question our name, and may think it inappropriate. Our belief is that a saint is a person who has been consecrated, or dedicated, to God. We may occasionally fall short of this ideal, and may be undeserving of the title, but saintliness is what we want to achieve.

If you would like to discuss the works exhibited, or, if this kingdom living we’ve referred to is a mystery to you, please contact us. We’d love to hear from you!
